Digital Archive services for your
Historic materials

Whether it's a large multi-collection museum or a small historical society, digital archiving is an essential way to preserve historical images and documents. Entire collections can be published on a single CD-ROM or DVD for storage and presentation. This decreases the need to handle original photographs and documents and allows archivists to safely preserve collections for future generations.  As you all know, time degrades the integrity of many of the materials in your historic archives. Digitizing your collection will preserve the existing materials and many items can also be digitally enhanced and restored to improve the quality of the material.

Through a computer program front end, similar to the Bentley Digital archives, your Historical Society's archives will be more accessible to the public and searchable through predefined keywords.

The archives could be categorized by date, geographical location, event or other criteria.

Other ideas could be to offer a version for sale to cover the cost of archiving, or to make the archives available on a touchscreen kiosk in your Historical Society’s Museum, archives or town hall.

The cost for such a project would start as low as $2,500 to help evaluate the Society's archives and build a computer program to access the extensive collection. Text  could be digitized and converted to searchable text for $1.00 to $4.00 per page depending on the quantity and format (bound or individual pages). Digitizing of images or other items in the archives would cost $3.00 to $8.00 each depending on size and quantity.

Although, some material could be digitized by your Historical Society representatives to economize on costs, we would still need to process the “pre-scanned” images to certain specifications.

After the initial evaluation your Historical Society could offer a Video presentation and or a slide show at various different locations in your town to generate support for the archive project. This support can come in the form of donations to the project and also an opportunity to pre sell a finished retail product.

There will be considerable time involved in planning and categorizing as well as the actual digitizing. Some additional options for the computer program could be: video presentations, slide shows & /or narration, interactive timeline, genealogical information or other ideas.

You may also want to consider in the planning an edited version that may be available for sale through your Historical Society.

Some steps to get started:

The first step is to organize the collection by category and priority.
  • Discuss how to present the material.
  • Discuss how people will search for info.
  • Note any items for restoration.
  • Discuss how to integrate new material after initial production.
  • Transcribe some text documents to computer readable text for searchability
  • Assign “keywords” to each item. (For search)
  • Digitize collection
  • Edit digital images
  • Create user interface for computer program.
  • Integrate collection to program
  • Testing

Once a “completed” version is approved by your Historical Society, WMS will supply 3 copies to your Historical Society.

"Hats off to Peter Wolf Photo-Graphics/Wolf Multimedia Studio. The Jericho based Multimedia Studio has been presented with a Silver AXIEM ("Absolute Excellence in Electronic Media") Award for the production of the Wilson Bentley Digital Archives (Volume 1) CD-ROM. The national award was given in the educational interactive media category. The Bentley CD-ROM competed against more than 1300 submissions from all 50 states to capture this prestigious award. Peter has spent countless hours compiling thousands of Bentley images and documents, and transferring them to a digital format. Besides the archival benefits of the program, Peter also created a wonderful educational (and fun) interactive biography of Bentley's life and work. Visit the "Snowflake" Bentley Exhibit at the Old Red Mill, in Jericho, to take a test run of the program at the newly completed, touch screen kiosk (or check the Bentley Website at http://snowflakebentley.com/ ). It has quickly become a favorite with tourists and locals alike. Congratulations Peter, GREAT JOB!!!!!! "
